Lower Allen Commissioner Thomas Kutz calls for safer conditions

for corrections officers

Kutz says protecting corrections officers and first responders must be a top priority

LOWER ALLEN, PA--Lower Allen Township Commissioner Thomas Kutz issued the following statement regarding the safety of corrections officers and emergency services personnel at state prisons:

"Recent assaults on correctional officers are disturbing, and we cannot allow them to continue. We must do better to protect our corrections officers and personnel. These brave men and women are often put in harm's way with little resources to help them in emergency situations.

"Lower Allen EMS often responds to medical emergencies at SCI Camp Hill. In addition to corrections staff, we must also prioritize the safety of emergency responders who are going into state prisons to provide emergency care in these situations.

"It is vital that we adequately fund and fully support safety measures in our state prisons to protect staff, corrections officers, and local first responders.”

The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Camp Hill is in Lower Allen Township. In 1989, riots at SCI Camp Hill led to the injuries of more than 60 corrections officers, the destruction of 14 buildings, and damage totaling more than $50 million.

Thomas Kutz is serving his first term as Lower Allen Township Commissioner. For more information about Thomas Kutz, please visit thomaskutz.com.
